Blame it on the changing lifestyles, severe back pain has become one big issue. Although there can be many reasons behind the severe back pain, majorly its because of the lifestyle. If you have a sitting job, the back gets affected. Old age is another reason for severe back pain. Disk diseases, muscle pulls and other health issues are also factors contributing to severe back pain.

The back is composed of disks, complex muscles, ligaments, and bones. The issues with any of these cause severe back pains. Secondly, the issue can be sprained, muscle pulls and bad posture.

A sudden jerk, lifting heavy things can cause a strain in ligaments or muscles. If your body is not used to lifting weights, you are more likely to get a strain in your back muscles causing severe back pain.


 Arthritis can also lead to back pain. Generally, arthritis causes the pain in the lower back but If the condition worsens, it may even create a gap around the spinal cord.

Disk Issues

Disks provide a cushioned lining between the bones and your spine. Any harm or tear in the disk can lead to pains.

Lack of Physical Activities

Sitting with an erect back for longer hours accompanied with zero physical exercise leads to severe back pains. The unused muscles lead to chronic pains. This cause is majorly seen in working professionals who have desk jobs for long hours.


With age, the bones get weak and thus the back pain can occur. Such issues occur from around the age of 40 years.



The symptoms for severe back pain are the shooting pain in any part of the back. However, this pain sometimes goes down to the thighs and sometimes it spreads across the waist. The back pain generally goes away in a few days. However, if it persists, you must see a doctor. If back pain is accompanied by:

  • Fever
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Nausea

It is important to get the real reason checked.

Before we start with the treatments, it is highly advisable to consult a physician. However, to get temporary relief from severe back pain, a few home remedies can prove beneficial.

  • Apply a hot compress or an ice pack on the area of pain.
  • Mild physical activity which includes stretching.
  • Take breaks from the long working hours. For every 1 hour, you sit on your chair, take out 5 mins of walking around.
  • Taking a painkiller or a muscle relaxant is ok but if you feel the need to take them more than once, its time you take an appointment with your doctor.
  • Maintain balanced body weight as excessive body weight will also put pressure on your back hence causing the severe back pain.
